IAPMO’s Aguilar to Receive ANSI Meritorious Service Award

Ontario, California — IAPMO® Senior Vice President of Codes and Standards Development Hugo Aguilar, P.E., has been named a recipient of the American National Standards Institute’s (ANSI) Meritorious Service Award, which recognizes “significant contributions to the U.S. voluntary standardization system.”

Aguilar and other recipients of ANSI’s Leadership and Service Awards will be honored at the ANSI Leadership and Service Awards Ceremony, held during the 2026 ANSI Innovation Summit on July 29 in Denver.

Now in his 15th year with IAPMO, Aguilar leads the development of IAPMO’s flagship model codes — the Uniform Plumbing Code(UPC®), Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC®), Uniform Solar, Hydronics and Geothermal Code (USHGC®), and Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Code (USPSHTC®). Under his leadership, these codes continue to reflect the latest technologies and best practices to advance public health, safety, and sustainability in the built environment.

Aguilar serves on a range of industry committees, including NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code), NFPA 915 (Standard for Remote Inspections), ASHRAE 15 (Safey Standards for Refrigeration Systems), ASHRAE 15.2 (Safety Standard for Refrigeration Systems in Residential Applications), the Canadian National Model Codes Committee, and is a previous board member for the Society for Standardization Professionals (SES). Aguilar also serves on the ANSI Board of Standards Review (BSR) and is the vice chair on the Standards Development Organization Advisory Committee (SDOAC) with the Standards Council of Canada (SCC). His participation in these committees reflects his commitment to consensus-driven standards that balance the needs of industry, regulators, and the public.

“Standards are part of everyday life, from code enforcement to the products we rely on,” Aguilar said. “They promote safety, reliability, and consistency while helping advance quality, innovation, and public trust. I am blessed and honored to receive the Meritorious Service Award.”

Throughout his career at IAPMO, Aguilar has championed a collaborative and evidence-based approach to shaping codes and standards that protect public health while enabling innovation. His deep knowledge of technical requirements, paired with a steady focus on safety and resilience, has positioned IAPMO as a trusted global partner in shaping the built environment.

“Hugo’s technical expertise, collaborative leadership and unwavering commitment to the consensus process have helped shape the future of codes and standards both within IAPMO and across the broader industry,” IAPMO CEO Dave Viola said. “His contributions have strengthened the foundation upon which safe, sustainable and resilient building systems are built. ANSI’s recognition is a fitting tribute to a career dedicated to advancing public health and safety through standards development.”
