    IAPMO Forming Hydrogen Fuel Gas Piping Task Group

    Ontario, Calif. — The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO®) is gathering a group of technical experts to participate on a Hydrogen Fuel Gas Piping Task Group.

    The task group’s goal is to create a Hydrogen Fuel Gas Piping Appendix for proposed addition to the 2027 edition of IAPMO’s Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC®). This is in line with IAPMO’s effort to continue developing the UPC as the most technical, flexible, and customizable plumbing code available to jurisdictions in the United States.

    “The world has committed to reducing its carbon footprint. To ensure we achieve this goal, we must reduce our dependency on fossil fuels,” IAPMO CEO Dave Viola said. “The utilization of hydrogen as an energy source will be a major part of achieving our goal. IAPMO is leading the way. We have established a hydrogen task force to ensure the installation of hydrogen piping and appliances is safe and our practitioners are trained and well informed around the world.”

    The task group will work on developing the following content within the new chapter:

    • Acceptable piping material for hydrogen gas
    • Inspections for hydrogen gas piping
    • Leak detection for hydrogen gas piping
    • Other hydrogen gas piping and appurtenance requirements

    “As hydrogen will soon be deployed around the world as an environmentally friendly major energy source, it is essential that the material used to convey hydrogen is subject to appropriate standards for safety, durability and resistance to corrosion,” IAPMO Vice President of Strategic Initiatives Christoph Lohr said. “By establishing this task force, IAPMO is assisting the world in its goal to achieve carbon neutrality and ensuring that communities are safe, along with the practitioners who are responsible for installing and maintaining hydrogen gas piping.”

    Report on Comments Toward Development of 2027 UPC, UMC Now Available for Online Download

    IAPMO®, developer of the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC®) and Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC®), has posted online the 2025 Report on Comments (ROC) for the 2027 editions of these American National Standard-designated model codes. The ROC includes the committee actions as discussed during the May 6-8 technical committee meetings, the electronic ballot results as balloted between May 19-June 16, and the Technical Correlating Committee actions on all comments received for the 2027 editions.

    IAPMO®, a global team of experts engaging industry and government for a safer built environment, was proud to support the the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Workshop: Strengthening Standards and Technical Regulations for Safer Drinking Water – Developing an International Roadmap. The two-day workshop helped kick off the Third Senior Officials’ Meeting and Related Meetings (SOM3), which began July 26 and are slated to run through Aug. 15.
