ASSE Seeks Working Group Members for Development of ASSE 18000 Professional Qualifications Standard

Mokena, Illinois — ASSE International is seeking subject matter experts and industry stakeholders to participate in a working group for the development of a proposed new professional qualification standard: ASSE 18000, Professional Qualifications Standard for Fuel Gas Systems and Equipment Installers and Repairers.

The working group will support the Professional Qualifications Standards Committee (PQSC) and will operate in accordance with ASSE’s accredited, open consensus procedures outlined in IAPMO/ASSE PP 1, Policies and Procedures for Consensus Development of American National Standards.

The proposed ASSE 18000 standard will establish minimum qualifications for individuals who install and repair fuel gas systems — systems that, if improperly handled, pose significant safety risks. The standard will apply to individuals working with natural gas fuel piping in residential, light commercial, and light industrial structures, as well as piping connected to systems originating from those structures.

Industry segments served: Plumbing, mechanical, maintenance, pipe fitting, stationary engineers, appliance installers, repairmen, service technicians and the general public.

By defining minimum competency requirements for professionals working on fuel gas systems, the standard aims to enhance public safety, reduce hazards, and promote consistent, high quality workmanship across the industry.

ASSE invites participation from a broad range of stakeholders, including installers and industry representatives, inspectors, trainers, safety professionals, utilities, manufacturers, regulatory authorities, and consumer advocates. Interested parties wishing to serve on ASSE working groups can fill out an application online by the March 1 deadline.

The first working group meeting will be held in person during the ASSE Mid Year Meeting in St. Louis on Tuesday, April 15. Subsequent meetings will be conducted virtually.
