IAPMO Group Codes and Standards provide innovative solutions for the protection of the public’s health, safety, and welfare.
Whether it’s through IAPMO’s Uniform Codes (Uniform Plumbing Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, Uniform Solar Energy, Hydronics and Geothermal Code, and Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Code), IAPMO’s Product Standards (ANSI, IGCs, PSs, and TSs) and covering innovative plumbing, solar, and mechanical products, IAPMO’s Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard (WE•Stand), or ASSE International’s Product Performance Standard (PS) and ASSE International's Product Qualifications Standards (PQ), we work hard to address the most pressing problems facing our industries through science-based research and solutions.
IAPMO CODE DEVELOPMENT
Plumbing and mechanical codes, like all building codes, are rules that provide for safe and civilized living. Building officials want their codes to make a positive difference in their constituents’ lives.
With its Uniform Plumbing Code, Uniform Mechanical Code, Uniform Solar Energy, Hydronics and Geothermal Code and Uniform Swimming Pool, Spa and Hot Tub Code designated as American National Standards, IAPMO is proud to utilize an open consensus process accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in its code development practice.
IAPMO STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT
For more than 30 years, IAPMO has developed industry standards (e.g., IGCs, PSs, and TSs) to cover innovative new plumbing products not covered by existing standards. Through our industry standards, IAPMO provides manufacturers and product developers a vehicle for introducing new products to the marketplace in timely manner.
IAPMO’s industry standards are jointly developed by IAPMO staff and stakeholders via an open process, which utilizes the principles of consensus. Such ANSI- and SCC-accredited standards are widely accepted by industry and regulators (jurisdictions).
WATER EFFICIENCY AND SANITATION STANDARD
IAPMO’s Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard (WE•Stand) is an American National Standard, replacing the Green Plumbing and Mechanical Code Supplement. WE•Stand is the first-ever standard that focuses solely on achieving safe and efficient water use in residential and commercial buildings.
With representation from code officials, manufacturers, plumbing engineers, contractors, the plumbing trades, water-efficiency proponents, water utilities, and more, the contents of WE•Stand include the latest comprehensive provisions aimed at achieving safe and reliable water efficiencies.
ASSE INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS
ASSE product and professional standards are developed through true industry consensus. This means that experts from all segments of the plumbing and mechanical industries, from across the country, gather to determine the minimum performance and knowledge requirements for products and professionals.
Deep knowledge and constant improvement of nearly 50 product performance standards for plumbing components, as well as 13 professional qualifications standards puts ASSE International in a class of its own. Such ANSI- and SCC-accredited standards are widely accepted by industry and regulators (jurisdictions).
IAPMO UNIFORM ES
Uniform ES is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) per the ISO/IEC Standard 17065, Conformity assessment — Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes, and services. This means that building products, materials and designs bearing the Uniform ES mark of conformity are trusted for their conformity and workmanship by contractors, inspectors, architects, engineers, officials, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.

About Plumbing Codes
Plumbing and mechanical codes, like all building codes, are rules that provide for safe and civilized living. Building officials want their codes to make a positive difference in their constituents’ lives. Plumbing systems keep us safe. Good plumbing codes keep plumbing systems safe.
Who Publishes The Uniform Plumbing Code?
The Uniform Plumbing Code is the only US plumbing code designated as an American National Standard by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The UPC and the UMC help protect public health and safety while advancing housing affordability and community resiliency.
What to Know About Local Plumbing Codes
Homes are complex structures with systems impacting everything from the aesthetics to safety considerations — an often not-well-understood process. There are multiple construction codes to follow when building your house, and it’s important to know all of them
