National Personnel Certification by IAPMO
IAPMO’s National Personnel Certification Program assesses knowledge of construction codes as an indicator of ability and professionalism. It provides a valid and reliable professional program of testing that represents most of the occupations and technical disciplines in the code administration profession. The program sets the minimum level of required knowledge for individuals working in the profession and commits them to continuous self-development through its certification renewal program.

This national program will meet the needs of:

ü  Governmental Jurisdictions and agencies who desire an examination and personnel certification program based on codes to determine the knowledge and capability of code administration personnel.

ü  Individuals who choose to provide evidence of their code knowledge for reasons such as prospective employment or advancement in a current position.

The certifications are organized by occupational titles, providing a progressive career path. Certification is achieved for most categories by successful completion of one examination.

To achieve certification, the candidate

  1.  Determines the exam required for each desired certification,
  2. Determines the exam administrator for the desired exam,
  3. Registers for the exam,
  4. Schedules convenient location and time
  5. Obtains the applicable reference materials,
  6.  Passes the exam,
  7. Receives a certificate and wallet card after successfully passing the exam.

A notification/admittance letter will be emailed to you approximately two weeks before the exam date. This letter will indicate the exam scheduled to be taken, the exam date, reporting time, and the exact address of the examination site or center. It will also list the materials that will be allowed in the examination site on the day of your exam.  You must take this letter with you to the examination location. You will be required to show it to the proctor to gain entrance to the exam room.  In addition to the letter, you will be required to show your driver’s license, a state-issued ID or a government passport.  A Social Security card is not acceptable as a form of positive identification. If your letter is lost, notify IAPMO immediately to request a duplicate.

Examination Results:

You will receive your examination results the same day immediately upon completing your computer-based exam.

For paper and pencil exams, upon completion, the answer sheets and test booklets are returned to the proctor and sent to IAPMO. Strict procedures are followed to ensure accuracy.
